About this tool

The estimate is words divided by a speaking rate. Everything depends on the rate you pick, so it is a control rather than a fixed assumption.

Useful anchors: conversational English runs around 150 words per minute, a measured presentation around 130, audiobook narration around 150, and a fast podcast around 180. Formal delivery is slower than people expect — nerves make speakers rush, so rehearsing at 130 and delivering at 160 is a common way to overrun.

What the arithmetic cannot include is pauses, and in a real talk they are substantial. A slide change, a question, or a beat for emphasis all add time that no word count predicts. For a talk with a hard limit, plan for roughly 10 to 15% over the calculated figure and rehearse aloud with a timer.

Common uses

  • Fitting a conference talk into its slot.
  • Timing a video script or voiceover.
  • Checking whether a speech needs cutting.

Frequently asked questions

Around 650 to 750 at a typical presentation pace of 130 to 150 words per minute. Set the rate here to match how you actually speak.
Why did my talk run over?
Pauses. Slide changes, questions and beats for emphasis are not in the word count. Allow roughly 10 to 15% above the calculated time.
What speaking rate should I use?
About 130 words per minute for a formal presentation, 150 for conversational delivery, and 180 for a fast podcast style.
