About this tool
A single discount is straightforward: the sale price is the original less the percentage. Stacked discounts are where shops and shoppers diverge — '30% off, then a further 20% off' is not 50% off. The second reduction applies to the already-reduced price, giving 44% off in total.
Both are shown here, so you can check a claimed total against what actually comes off at the till.
Common uses
- Checking a sale price before buying.
- Working out a staff or loyalty discount.
- Verifying a stacked promotion.
Frequently asked questions
- Is 30% off then 20% off the same as 50% off?
- No. The second discount applies to the reduced price, so the combined effect is 44% off. Stacked discounts are always less than the sum.
- How do I find the original price from a sale price?
- Divide by (1 − discount). A price of 70 after 30% off came from 70 ÷ 0.7 = 100.
