About this tool

The tip is a percentage of the bill before tax in most conventions, though plenty of people tip on the total; both give similar answers on ordinary bills.

Splitting is where the pennies go missing. Dividing a total by three rarely lands on a round number, so the exact per-person amount is shown along with a rounded-up figure that covers the bill — the version you actually hand over.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Convention is pre-tax, but the difference is small and many people tip on the total. Either is accepted.

What if a service charge is already included?

Then an additional tip is optional. Check the bill — some venues add 12.5% automatically.
