About this tool
Markup pricing starts from what something costs you and adds a percentage of that cost. It is the simplest pricing rule and the one most wholesalers quote in.
The margin that results is always lower than the markup, because it is measured against the larger number. A 50% markup gives a 33.3% margin; a 100% markup gives 50%. If your business plans in margins, convert before setting the rule, or you will consistently price too low.
Common uses
- Pricing stock from a supplier cost.
- Applying a standard markup across a product line.
- Checking what margin a given markup will leave.
Frequently asked questions
- What markup gives a 50% margin?
- 100%. To hit a target margin m, the markup is m ÷ (1 − m).
- Should I price on markup or margin?
- Margin, if you are managing profitability, because it relates directly to revenue. Markup is fine as a shortcut once you know the equivalent.
