About this tool

A GPA is a credit-weighted average: each course's grade points are multiplied by its credits, and the total is divided by the credits attempted. A five-credit course therefore moves the average far more than a one-credit course with the same grade.

Enter grade points directly (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3, and so on) since institutions differ on the exact values — particularly whether plus and minus grades adjust by 0.3 or 0.33, and whether an A+ can exceed 4.0. Use your own institution's table.

Common uses

  • Working out this term's GPA before results are published.
  • Seeing how much a heavy course affects the average.
  • Checking what grades are needed to reach a target.

Frequently asked questions

What grade points should I enter?
Your institution's values. The common scale is A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0.
Why is my GPA lower than my average grade?
Because credits weight it. A poor grade in a high-credit course pulls the average down more than a good grade in a small one lifts it.
