About this tool

The formula rearranges the weighted average: required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight, where weight is the exam's share of the course.

The answer is often outside 0–100, and that is the useful result. Above 100 means the target is no longer reachable no matter how well the exam goes; below 0 means it is already secured. Both are said plainly here rather than being clipped to a comforting number.

Common uses

  • Deciding how hard to push before a final exam.
  • Checking whether a target grade is still possible.
  • Seeing what mark keeps a scholarship threshold.

Frequently asked questions

What if I need more than 100%?
The target is out of reach through the exam alone. Check whether extra credit exists, or set a realistic target.
What counts as my current grade?
Your weighted mark for everything completed so far, excluding the final. Most course portals show this figure.
