About this tool

Different barcode symbologies exist for different jobs. Code 128 encodes any text and is the right choice for internal use — asset tags, shelf labels, your own stock system. EAN-13 and UPC-A are the retail formats printed on products, and Code 39 persists in logistics and defence because old scanners still read it.

The checksum is handled for you: enter 12 digits for EAN-13 and the check digit is calculated, which is the step people usually get wrong by hand.

One thing worth being clear about: generating a barcode does not register a product. Retail EAN and UPC numbers are allocated by GS1 for a fee, and a number you invent will scan happily while potentially colliding with a real product somewhere. For anything sold through retailers, buy the number; for anything internal, Code 128 needs no registration at all.

Common uses

  • Labelling equipment or stock internally.
  • Producing a scannable code for a shelf label.
  • Rendering an existing product number as a barcode.

Frequently asked questions

Can I invent my own EAN or UPC number?
It will scan, but retail numbers are allocated by GS1 to be globally unique. An invented one can clash with a real product. For internal use, Code 128 avoids the issue entirely.
Which format should I choose?
Code 128 for anything internal — it takes letters and numbers. EAN-13 or UPC-A only if you have a real allocated retail number.
Why does my number get rejected?
Each symbology has strict length and character rules: EAN-13 wants 12 or 13 digits, UPC-A 11 or 12, and Code 39 accepts uppercase letters, digits and a few symbols only.
