- Choose the unit you have and the unit you want.
- Read the result, or use the table showing all 13 units at once.
About this tool
The trap in volume is that US and imperial units share names but not sizes. An imperial pint is 568 ml while a US pint is 473 ml — about 20% larger — and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres against the US gallon's 3.785. Both are offered separately here so you never have to guess which one a figure meant.
For recipes, use the cooking converter instead: it starts from the measures kitchens actually use.
Common uses
- Converting fuel volumes between litres and gallons.
- Reading a drinks measure given in the other system.
- Checking a container's capacity in cubic metres.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a US gallon the same as an imperial gallon?
- No. A US gallon is 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, about 20% larger. Both appear in the list.
- How many millilitres are in a litre?
- Exactly 1,000. A litre is also exactly one cubic decimetre.
