How to use the iso 8601 converter

  1. Paste a date or timestamp in any recognisable form.
  2. Read every representation.
  3. Check the timezone warning if one appears.

About this tool

ISO 8601 exists because every other date format is ambiguous. `03/04/2026` is the third of April in Britain and the fourth of March in America, and nothing in the string tells you which. Writing the year first, then the month, then the day removes the ambiguity — and has the useful side effect that sorting such dates alphabetically also sorts them chronologically.

The standard covers more than the familiar form. Week dates such as `2026-W11-6` identify a day by its ISO week and weekday, which is how manufacturing and retail planning often works. Ordinal dates such as `2026-073` give the day of the year, used in astronomy and some logistics systems. Both are shown here alongside the ordinary form.

The warning worth having is about a missing timezone. A timestamp such as `2026-03-14T09:30:00` with no `Z` and no offset is genuinely ambiguous, and different systems resolve it differently — some assume UTC, some assume the local timezone of whatever is reading it. The same string can therefore mean two moments hours apart, which is a real and frequent source of bugs. This flags it rather than quietly picking one.

Every calculation is done in UTC. Working in local time silently gains or loses an hour across a daylight saving boundary, which turns a difference of exactly seven days into six days and twenty-three hours — a bug that appears twice a year and is therefore rarely caught.

Common uses

  • Converting a timestamp for an API that requires ISO 8601.
  • Finding the ISO week date for a given day.
  • Checking what a timestamp means when it has no timezone.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ISO 8601 put the year first?
To remove ambiguity — 03/04/2026 means different days in different countries — and because it makes dates sort chronologically when sorted as text.
What does the Z mean?
UTC, sometimes called Zulu time. Without it or an offset, the timestamp has no timezone and different systems will interpret it differently.
What is a week date?
A day identified by ISO week and weekday, such as 2026-W11-6. Manufacturing and retail planning commonly work in these.
