About this tool

HSV and HSB are the same model under two names — value and brightness are the same axis. It is what the square-and-slider colour picker in most design tools is built on: the square is saturation against value at a fixed hue.

The difference from HSL is what the top of the scale means. In HSL, lightness 100% is always white. In HSV, value 100% is the most vivid version of the hue, and you reach white by dropping saturation instead. That is why picking colours feels more natural in HSV and describing them feels more natural in HSL.

Both address the same sRGB colours; neither can express anything the other cannot.

Common uses

  • Matching a value shown in a design tool's colour picker.
  • Finding the most vivid version of a hue.
  • Moving colour values between tools that use different models.

Frequently asked questions

Are HSV and HSB different?
No, they are two names for the same model. Value and brightness refer to the same axis.
What is the difference between HSV and HSL?
In HSL, 100% lightness is white. In HSV, 100% value is the most saturated version of the hue, and white comes from lowering saturation.
Which should I use in CSS?
HSL — CSS supports hsl() natively and has no hsv() function.
