About this tool
Greyscale conversion weights the colour channels by how bright the eye perceives them — green counts for far more than blue — which is why a proper conversion looks natural where simply averaging the channels looks flat and muddy.
The slider allows partial desaturation. Around 60–80% keeps a hint of the original colour, which often suits portraits better than going all the way.
Common uses
- Making a photo monochrome for print.
- Toning down a distracting background colour.
- Checking how a design reads without colour.
Frequently asked questions
- Is greyscale the same as desaturating?
- In effect, yes — both remove colour. A proper greyscale conversion weights the channels by perceived brightness rather than averaging them.
- Can I get the colour back?
- Not from the saved file — the colour information is gone. Keep your original.
