About this tool
Cropping removes the parts of a picture you do not want and, more usefully, changes what the picture is about. Tightening on a subject removes competing detail; changing the ratio makes the same photograph fit a square avatar or a wide banner.
Because cropping only discards pixels, it never reduces the quality of what remains — but it does reduce the total resolution. Crop hard from a small image and the result may end up smaller than the space it has to fill, which is where softness creeps in.

- Does cropping reduce image quality?
- Not for the area you keep — those pixels are unchanged. The overall resolution drops because the image is now smaller.
