Processing: This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your input and any file you open stay on your device — nothing is uploaded to a server.

How to use the bmp to png

  1. Choose your BMP file.
  2. Adjust the quality if the target format is lossy.
  3. Download the PNG file.

About this tool

Conversion happens in the page: the BMP file is decoded by your browser, redrawn, and re-encoded as PNG. Nothing is uploaded, so there is no queue and no copy of your image on someone else's machine. The practical ceiling is your own device's memory rather than a server's rules.

PNG compresses losslessly, so the image is identical and the file is much smaller than the BMP.

The image's pixel dimensions are unchanged — only the format and file size differ. To change the size as well, use the image resizer afterwards.

Common uses

  • Sending an image to software that will not accept BMP.
  • Reducing the file size of a BMP image.
  • Standardising a set of images on one format.

Frequently asked questions

Is my BMP file uploaded?
No. Your browser decodes the BMP and re-encodes it as PNG on your own device, so the image never reaches a server and the only limit is your device's memory.
Does converting BMP to PNG lose quality?
The BMP to PNG step itself is lossless — PNG stores every pixel exactly as it was decoded. Any loss already baked into the BMP stays there, because no conversion can recover detail that was discarded when the file was first written.
Does PNG support transparency?
Yes — PNG keeps an alpha channel, so transparency in the BMP is preserved rather than filled in.
Are the pixel dimensions changed?
No. A BMP at 4000×3000 becomes a PNG at 4000×3000 — only the encoding changes, not the number of pixels. Use the image resizer if you need to change the dimensions as well.
