About this tool
Tyres are the everyday case: European cars are labelled in bar, American gauges read in psi, and the two differ by a factor of about 14.5. A typical car tyre at 2.2 bar is about 32 psi.
One atmosphere — average sea-level air pressure — is 101,325 pascals, which is 1.013 bar or 14.7 psi. Torr and millimetres of mercury are nearly identical and still used in medicine and vacuum work.
Common uses
- Setting tyre pressure from a label in the other unit.
- Reading a gauge that uses a different scale.
- Converting a weather or altitude pressure figure.
Frequently asked questions
- What is 2.2 bar in psi?
- About 31.9 psi. One bar is 14.5038 psi.
- Is a bar the same as an atmosphere?
- Nearly. One atmosphere is 1.01325 bar, so they are close enough for tyres and quite different for precise work.
