About this tool

Hertz counts events per second, so the multiples are straightforward: a thousand hertz is a kilohertz, a million a megahertz.

The conversion worth understanding is to revolutions and beats per minute, because they measure the same thing on a different clock. One hertz is sixty per minute, so a motor turning at 3,000 rpm is running at exactly 50 Hz — which is why mains-driven motors in a 50 Hz country settle at multiples of 3,000 rpm and those in a 60 Hz country at multiples of 3,600.

Beats per minute in music is the same arithmetic. A 120 bpm track is 2 Hz.

Common uses

  • Converting a processor or radio frequency between units.
  • Relating motor speed in rpm to mains frequency.
  • Turning a musical tempo into hertz.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert rpm to Hz?
Divide by 60. A motor at 3,000 rpm runs at 50 Hz, which is why mains-driven motors settle at multiples of 3,000 or 3,600 depending on the country.
Is bpm the same as Hz?
Dimensionally yes — both count events per unit time. A 120 bpm tempo is 2 Hz.
