Data Storage Converter
Convert between bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and their binary equivalents.

How to use the data storage converter
- Type the amount you want to convert.
- Choose the unit you have and the unit you want.
- Read the result, or use the table showing all 10 units at once.
About this tool
There are two systems, and mixing them is why storage numbers never seem to add up. Decimal units go in powers of 1,000: a megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes. Binary units go in powers of 1,024: a mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes.
Drive manufacturers use the decimal units, so a drive sold as 1 TB holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows reports in binary units but labels them 'GB', so the same drive appears as about 931. Nothing is missing — the two sides are counting differently.
Both systems are listed here, so you can convert within one or compare across them.
Common uses
- Working out why a drive shows less space than advertised.
- Converting a file size limit between units.
- Estimating how much a backup will need.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does my 1 TB drive show as 931 GB?
- The manufacturer counted 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes; your operating system divides by 1,024 three times and still writes 'GB'. Same bytes, different arithmetic.
- What is the difference between MB and MiB?
- A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes; a mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes — about 4.9% more.
