About this tool

The tile count is the area divided by the area of one tile, plus wastage. Wastage is not optional: tiles break, edges need cutting, and a diagonal layout wastes considerably more than a straight one. 10% is the usual allowance for a simple rectangular room, 15% where there are many cuts, and 20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

Buying the extra with the original order matters more than the cost — tile batches vary in shade, and a later top-up rarely matches exactly.

Common uses

  • Ordering tiles for a bathroom or kitchen floor.
  • Checking a supplier's quantity before ordering.
  • Estimating boxes needed from a tile size.

Frequently asked questions

How much wastage should I allow?
10% for a straightforward rectangular room, 15% with lots of cuts, and 20% for diagonal or herringbone layouts.
Why buy extra tiles at the same time?
Shade varies between production batches. A later purchase may not match, and keeping a few spares makes future repairs possible.
