How to use the fraction calculator
- Fill in the fields — they start with a worked example.
- Read the answer, and the arithmetic shown beneath it.
- Copy the results, or adjust the inputs to compare scenarios.
About this tool
Fractions are added by putting them over a common denominator, then simplified by dividing both parts by their greatest common divisor. Every step is shown, which is the difference between an answer and an explanation.
The result is given three ways — simplified fraction, mixed number and decimal — because different contexts want different forms.
Common uses
- Checking homework working rather than just the answer.
- Combining measurements written as fractions.
- Converting an awkward fraction to a decimal.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I add fractions with different denominators?
- Convert both to the same denominator — the product of the two always works — add the numerators, then simplify. The working shows each step.
- What is a mixed number?
- A whole number with a fraction beside it, like 1½, rather than an improper fraction such as 3/2.
