About this tool

Converting an hourly rate to a salary is arithmetic; converting a salary into a freelance rate is not. An employee's 2,080 hours a year include paid holiday, sick leave and time between projects that a contractor absorbs themselves.

Setting weeks worked to 46 or 44 rather than 52 makes that visible: the same target income needs a noticeably higher hourly rate once unpaid weeks are accounted for. Figures here are gross, before tax and any employer costs.

Common uses

  • Comparing a contract rate against a salaried job.
  • Setting a freelance rate from a target income.
  • Converting a monthly salary to an hourly figure.

Frequently asked questions

How many working hours are in a year?
2,080 for a 40-hour week over 52 weeks. Contractors usually plan on fewer paid weeks, which is why the weeks field is adjustable.
Is this before or after tax?
Before. Tax depends on your country, allowances and status, so applying a rate here would be misleading.
