About this tool

CAGR is the steady annual rate that would take a starting value to an ending value over a period — the smoothed growth rate. It answers 'what rate would have produced this?', which makes two very different histories comparable.

That smoothing is also its limitation. A business that grew 80% one year and shrank 30% the next has the same CAGR as one that grew steadily, and they are not the same business. CAGR describes the endpoints, not the journey.

Common uses

  • Reporting revenue growth over several years.
  • Comparing an investment against a benchmark.
  • Turning total growth into a per-year figure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CAGR and average growth?
An average of yearly percentages overstates growth when results vary, because percentages do not average linearly. CAGR is the rate that actually reproduces the endpoints.
Can CAGR be negative?
Yes. If the ending value is lower than the starting value, the rate is negative — a compound annual decline.
